"Oceana" The Mermaid
Sculpture by Jo-Anne Sullivan
This project has been underway for over three years. When the idea surfaced to produce another mermaid (the last one was created over 20 years ago), my creative mind went wild. I have built as many as a dozen different mermaids over my career and had always wanted to produce a special one in a class of its own, standing out from the ones that came before her. The opulence and magnificence I imagined in my own visionary mind could only be manifested with painstaking attention to details and there are many, many details to behold.
While she is mainly covered in fabric, her tail is made from over 7,000 metal scales; each one hand placed. She reclines upon a great golden pile of jewels and treaures. The crowns and jewels are mainly hand crafted by myself but there are surprises like vintage jewellery, gemstones and 27 different types of beautiful shells from around the world.
After 3 intense years of devotion and hard work, I am proud to present my lifesized Sculpture of "Oceana" - the Mermaid.
